Rhizome (aka “Von” = ” Hope ” in Icelandic) is a software platform for writers, small publishers, and internet archivists. It implements the idea of an international publishing guild society and its substantial individuals publishing/archiving each others’ work, based on the simple alliance-based consensus.
Rhizome (“Von” = 아이슬란드어로 “희망”이라고도 함)은 작가, 소규모 출판사 및 인터넷 기록 보관인을 위한 소프트웨어 플랫폼입니다. 이 플랫폼은 간단한 동맹 기반 합의를 기반으로 국제 출판 길드 사회와 그 실질적인 개인들이 서로의 작업을 출판/보관하는 아이디어를 구현합니다.
So far in the history of recording technology, records were not viewed as neutral preservations of past events. Instead, they were seen as tools used for power relations of the time, used to legitimize and maintain power permanently. Historical records has been selectively cherry-picked to reflect the interests of those in power, determining what is remembered and what is forgotten.

To mitigate this issue and democratize the right to be remembered properly, Rhizome resurrects and inherits the idea of newsgroup subscriptions of USENET. USENET was a mainstream, worldwide distributed discussion system available on computers, decades ago before the introduction of World Wide Web (WWW). Compared to the WWW, which got exploited by material interests despite its good purpose, USENET could maintain its behaviour of the public sphere (Jürgen Habermas) , thus leading to its own decline in the world of emerging pariah capitalism of the dot-com bubble.

Rhizome aims to recreate the ritual of distributed subscription between small newsgroups, on the current technological stack of Web3 (which is often considered a buzzword nowadays, while here we use this term to simply refer to the current state of Web technology), thus making it fairly accessible to the honourable commoners of the Internet. Hence we used the following principles to build Rhizome:

- The protocol is simple, groups fetch articles from other groups they’re subscribing to. It can be recursively repeated. Nothing can be simpler than this. 프로토콜은 간단합니다. 그룹들은 구독하고 있는 다른 그룹들로부터 아티클을 가져옵니다. 이는 재귀적으로 반복될 수 있습니다. 이보다 더 간단할 수는 없습니다.
- The raw data of each article and timestamp will be stored with InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) , thus making the data exchange between groups efficient and intuitive. Only a short string CID (Content ID of IPFS) will be involved in Tx/Rx. 각 아티클과 타임스탬프의 원시 데이터는 IPFS(InterPlanetary File System)에 저장되므로 그룹 간의 데이터 교환이 효율적이고 직관적입니다. 짧은 문자열 CID(IPFS의 Content ID)만이 Tx/Rx에 관여합니다.
- Each group generates an OpenTimeStamp (OTS) file when their member uploads an article, to prevent such member’s publication time getting hijacked elsewhere. 각 그룹은 구성원이 아티클을 업로드할 때 OpenTimeStamp (OTS) 파일을 생성하여 해당 구성원의 게시 시간이 다른 곳에서 탈취되는 것을 방지합니다.
- Every upload is reviewed by the group’s designated reviewers before upload, preventing the upload of malicious articles. 모든 업로드는 그룹의 지정된 검토자가 업로드 전에 검토하여 악성 기사의 업로드를 방지합니다.
- When you can’t find a decent group for your article, you can run your own group instance anytime. 귀하의 기사에 적합한 그룹을 찾을 수 없을 때 언제든지 귀하의 그룹 인스턴스를 실행할 수 있습니다.
- When you’re having trouble running your own node, you can reach out and ask us for support. We cannot run a node for you, but we can support you like Houston did to the Apollo 13 Flight Team. 자신의 노드를 실행하는 데 문제가 있는 경우 지원을 요청할 수 있습니다. 노드를 직접 실행해 드릴 수는 없지만 휴스턴이 아폴로 13호 비행팀을 지원했던 것처럼 지원해 드릴 수 있습니다.
#Raison d’etre
When thinking about humanity’s history of the Archive and its protection, we have to start from the Library of Alexandria. There are many hypotheses about the cause of failure of the Library, but regardless of the specific reason, it’s a tragedy to let the trace of our passage on this earth slip away like that from our hands.

Some might ask questions here: why do we care? What matters is the current situation, like in zero-sum games. However, Nietzsche and Camus tells us why it is crucial to keep working with our past, for the present moment and future advancement of history awaiting us.

For since we are the outcome of earlier generations, we are also the outcome of their aberrations, passions and errors, and indeed of their crimes; it is not possible wholly to free oneself from this chain. If we condemn these aberrations and regard ourselves as free of them, this does not alter the fact that we originate in them.
